Richmond Speed Skating Oval in construction

Richmond Speed Skating Oval
Morrison Hershfield was the envelope consultant with Cannon Design for the innovative speed skating oval in Richmond, BC. At the time of completion, it was the third largest building of its type in the world. The $155 million facility uses innovative cladding materials such as polycarbonate cladding being employed to cover very large wall areas. Other traditional materials such as curtain wall, metal siding and composite metal cladding are also used.
The Richmond Oval is a unique building with unique design and construction requirements. Because of our experience in the development and testing of innovative building enclosure systems, Morrison Hershfield was in a position to evaluate the benefits and risks of using new envelope systems and defining methods of controlling the risks. Our broad construction review experience was invaluable in developing details that provide the required building enclosure systems in the complex geometry and mix of systems desired by the architect. When the tight schedule taxed the CADD capacity of the architectural team, Morrison Hershfield was in a position to contribute by providing enclosure details.

Morrison Hershfield also assisted the team on Building Energy Modeling for BC Hydro Power Smart Incentive Funding.
