West Nile Virus Monitoring Surveillance Program Morrison Hershfield
Morrison Hershfield has been retained by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to design and conduct an annual work program for the surveillance and treatment of mosquitoes throughout the Ministry’s highway facilities.  The annual program is divided into three phases; surveillance, larviciding and preparation of the final Ministry of Environment Summary Report.  The focus is on species of mosquito that are known to transmit West Nile virus.

Surveys of mosquito larvae are important aspects of an effective surveillance and control program.  These surveys are used to determine the location, species and population densities of pest and vector mosquitoes.  This information is vital for predicting adult emergence and establishing optimal times for the application of larval control measures.
