Wastewater Utilities Network

Morrison Hershfield was retained to provide pre-design, detailed design, progressive tendering, and construction management for the $35M Phase One East Rocky View Regional Wastewater Utilities Network.
Undertaken for the Municipal District of Rocky View No. 44 in Alberta, this project consisted of a 54 km, 600 mm diameter wastewater transmission main; a 3,700 m3 surge reservoir; three 800 L/s lift stations; 54 km of roadway reconstruction; and 48 canal, roadway and pipeline crossings.

We were also retained to provide the preliminary design of a new $15M wastewater treatment plant in Langdon, which will tie into the wastewater transmission main project.

We developed a geographic information system; examined design flow rates for the immediate, mid-term, and long-term condition, including performing dynamic modeling to ensure the most efficient use of the wastewater treatment plant; developed and recommend routing options; and performed geotechnical investigation, topographic survey, environmental impact assessment, and historical resource impact assessment for the selected route.

The firm also obtained Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Navigable Waters approvals, land acquisition, and crossing agreements; monitored infiltration/inflow, and analyzed force main hydraulics; reviewed and obtained approvals from Alberta Environment, Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and other stakeholders; and provided progressive tendering and construction management.  A seamless project management team was created with the Municipal District of Rocky View’s Utilities and Operations departments.

The project was designed and constructed utilizing Morrison Hershfield’s advanced project management skills in thirteen months. This tight schedule was met by having us complete the procuring of the pipe, the pumps, and MCC panels and generators, as well as prequalifying contractors before tendering. The construction management entailed working with three different general contractors and ten simultaneous construction crews.
