In March 2005, Petro-Canada added the Fort Hills mining project to their impressive list of oil sands assets. Located north of Fort McMurray AB, Fort Hills is one of the largest remaining undeveloped oil sands leases in the Athabasca region. The Sturgeon Upgrader is located in the Sturgeon Industrial Area northeast of Edmonton AB.
Our key deliverables in this Front End Engineering Design (FEED) project were a Class 3 cost estimate and schedule, construction communication system and project plan for execution phases. A detailed silo interface was required to capture the requirements of all other groups and stakeholders.
The key telecommunications components included an optical fiber plant, wireless connectivity, land mobile radio network, mission critical facilities (data centers), security and access control, radio frequency identification (RFID) and fire and life safety.
The system architecture included support and/or capacity for connectivity to site, LAN/WAN, telephony, construction communications, emergency communications, automation, and instrumentation and control systems.
Morrison Hershfield was retained for execution phase of the project, including detailed engineering and procurement and construction of ‘early-works’ (construction communications).
Our extensive telecommunications experience and depth of resources provided the client with the services they required within their time frame. We were in the unique position to deliver a complete telecommunications design in that our expertise included both civil infrastructure and electronics equipment, while having no associations or preferences with equipment vendors.
