For the Platform 5/6 and Bay East Teamway Design Build Project, a total of nine new public stairs were built, several of which were within new openings in train-supporting structures, while others were located within existing historic elevator shafts. A new enclosed pedestrian concourse was constructed to provide direct passenger access between the platforms and the GO Transit bus terminal. The project also included platform improvements and renovations along the full length of Platform 5/6, and at the east ends of Platforms 2/3, 3/4 and 4/5.
Successful construction within an active transportation facility required a practical, detailed and cooperative approach to implement the desired improvements while protecting passenger safety and comfort, and ensuring that shut downs were planned and of short duration. Careful attention to heritage preservation concerns and requirements were key in securing the necessary approvals from federal and municipal authorities. Having participated in a formal partnering process, Morrison Hershfield's team fully understood and were guided by the needs of GO Transit and the other various stakeholders for safety, ease of operations, and maintenance and durability, while also accommodating the Contractor’s need to maintain schedule and budget.
Morrison Hershfield's extensive experience with renovation projects at Union Station over 30 years, and a detailed structural analysis of the train supporting structure resulted in adjustments to the originally-proposed stair locations and orientations, to reduce cost, schedule and overall risk. Constant communication between GO Transit, their representative consultant HDI-Joint Venture, Kenaidan and our own sub consultants was essential to delivering a successful project that addressed the strict requirements of the design-build contract.
Morrison Hershfield's scope was expanded during the project, to include engineering services for the structural rehabilitation of the Bay East archway, a deteriorated concrete support structure for the railway bridge over Bay Street.
