The project, undertaken by Morrison Hershfield for the Region of Ottawa-Carleton, included a new bridge, a temporary railway detour and 2.2 km of permanent CN Rail track relocation. It involved extensive retaining wall structures, a transitway station, new and relocated City of Ottawa roadworks, storm and sanitary sewers, watermains and services as well as extensive utility relocations and reconstruction.
In undertaking this assignment Morrison Hershfield:
- Developed and assessed alternative concepts leading to a major revised functional design followed by the detailed design and contract document preparation for construction
- Conducted an Environmental Impact Study and prepared a mitigation design to meet federal, provincial and regional guidelines for a relocated section of Sawmill Creek
- Designed rock tunneling, liners and casing for watermain and sewers crossing under CNR tracks
- Carried out public consultation and liaison with other consultants, utility companies and government agencies
- Provided construction staging, scheduling and cost estimating, construction inspection and administration services
Morrison Hershfield brought extensive railway experience to this venture. Assistance was provided with negotiations and a design was developed that led to a significantly revised and acceptable agreement among all stakeholders for the use of the transportation corridor. Various alternative design concepts were developed and compared in order to reach a final design that was of overall optimum value to the client.
Morrison Hershfield also coordinated the requirements of numerous parties and approving agencies to facilitate the project on a fast track basis.
