Major challenges were posed by the active tracks, many switches and track facilities. Additional challenges were the a web of utilities below ground and the proximity to other structures such as the skywalk bridge, corridor retaining wall and commercial properties.
The new design involves a sophisticated temporary shoring system, track relocation planning and signal modifications, storm and foul sewage pumping and storage facilities, tunnel and street illumination and a structural system that can be constructed over one weekend for minimum disruption.
Extensive project liaison with the City Departments, GO Transit, CN, TTR, Property Owners, and other stakeholders were essential to keep all parties abreast of latest developments.
Morrison Hershfield undertook the following:
-
Provided overall project planning and management deliverables, including meeting and minutes, NTA Agreements, liaison documents, project schedule, and costing
-
Produced three contract packages, including the main package and two advance contracts for signal and track works
-
Conducted foundation investigation and design
-
Provided electrical installations
-
Produced calculations, drawings, specifications and estimates
-
Provided construction supervision and contract administration
-
Produced structural, bridge, retaining walls, building alternatives, temporary works, track design, and sign design
-
Produced track detour schemes
-
Oversaw all subconsultants, particularly in municipal work designs
This project further illustrates Morrison Hershfield’s experience and ability to tackle large-scale projects constructed in busy urban centers. Complicated track detour problems were addressed in order to maintain undisrupted train services for a number of authorities. Careful staging of the construction work and innovative use of temporary works, as well as advance work such as new switches and signals were developed and used.
