The project consists of a main span of triangular steel truss bridge and pre-cast concrete ramps. The lengths of the ramps were reduced considerably by employing a landscaped berm on both sides of the overpass.
The $1.5 million structure was completely paid for by Mediacom - a division of Viacom, an outdoor advertising company. In exchange for funding the project, the City gave Mediacom twenty year advertising rights for billboards integrated into the structure. The advertising panels are supported from the superstructure, and blend well with the structural steel. According to Mediacom, this is the first Canadian example of a corporate client funding an important community project in exchange for advertising rights. Without this arrangement, the City would have had to raise property taxes by five percent.
Morrison Hershfield identified the project, then provided technical and project management expertise during planning and execution. Services included:
- Project management
- Coordinating with the City of New Westminster
- Working with BC Gas and The Greater Vancouver Regional District
- Producing structural and electrical designs
- Inspecting periodically during construction
"Council is pleased with the arrangement between the city and Mediacom that will benefit the city for many years to come."
Mayor Helen Sparkes
"Mediacom is proud to be able to participate in this innovative project. It’s a wonderful example of how the public and private sectors can work together to provide needed community services, and an opportunity for business to grow."
Brian McLean, President, Mediacom
