Multiple Ice Pads Arena Facilities
Multiple Ice Pads Arena Facilities, Canlan Ice Sports, Morrison Hershfield

These three year-round operated, multiple ice pad arena facilities all suffered from water accumulation in the roof system above the rink surfaces.  Condensation had been accumulating within the ceiling space since construction, and water drops from the ceiling space had been affecting the ice surface.

By combining our building envelope, mechanical and electrical expertise, Morrison Hershfield implemented a proven unique solution to the condensation problem, involving ventilation of the roof cavity space, between the ceiling membrane and underside of the metal roof, to dry out the insulation and control future moisture problems.

Morrison Hershfield’s investigation at Etobicoke and Scarborough (four-pad complexes), revealed design deficiencies with the thermal and vapour barrier design of the roofs and poor HVAC control systems.  Simply removing and replacing the roof systems was not considered, as construction costs and loss of revenue (i.e. ice rental) were not options for the Client.

The modifications proposed by Morrison Hershfield generally cost less than $60,000 per complex, and caused minimal disruption to normal operations.  By minimizing construction costs and extending the service life of the roof systems, the Client was able to undertake various other upgrades to maintain the Canlan standard throughout the three complexes.
