The various locations were ranked through a matrix process and the highest ranking site was chosen. Once the site was identified, Morrison Hershfield completed the preliminary and detailed designs and provided construction management services for the civil site components. These components included site access roads, rail, building pad sites, water/wastewater services, log yard, stormwater management facilities, firewater system and shallow utility coordination.
The preliminary site development commenced with the tree harvest and limited site grubbing and stripping. Once the site was cleared, the area was surveyed for detailed design.
Over the winter months the Morrison Hershfield design team carried forward with detailed design of the civil components. Site work began again in the early spring, with the design being fast tracked to have the civil site work substantially completed by the fall. As a result, considerable effort has gone into supporting the site construction team with field level design changes.
The final grading and rail construction was completed just over two yeas later. Because of Morrison Hershfield’s prior experience in dealing with “Greenfield” sites, we were able to provide the civil engineering necessary to accomplish the objective of building a world-class OSB Mill in Slave Lake, Alberta.
