Highway 8 Widening at Conestoga Parkway Interchange
Highway 8 Widening at Conestoga Parkway Interchange
This project demonstrates Morrison Hershfield’s experience and ability to take on major projects as this was the largest single transportation project recently in the Kitchener ON region.   The project involved the widening of Highway 8 from four to six lanes by appropriating a significant amount of property on the east side of the highway, building over 500m of retaining walls up to 13m high.  The project was completed at an overall construction cost of $30 M.

There are a total of three new bridges, including a 450m long curve 3rd level bridge connecting the westbound Highway 7 (Conestoga Parkway) onto southbound Highway 8, and two post-tensioned bridges for a new ramp and a city overpass.

Sophisticated traffic staging was designed and implemented to minimize disruption to traffic on Highway 8 and 7, as well as adjacent roads, including King, Weber, Franklin and Kingsway.  Extensive public consultation and liaison including local municipalities (Region and Cities) was conducted.  Environmental issues regarding the Montgomery Creek were also addressed.

Morrison Hershfield provided:

  • Investigation, detailed design and contract preparation services for all highway, drainage, structural, and electrical work
  • Full time contract supervision and contract administration on behalf of the Ministry

Key deliverables included:

  • Preliminary and final structural design
  • Preparation of design reports
  • Drawing and document preparation
  • Construction supervision and contract administration

The design process was effectively controlled and issues related to the complicated consultation process, property acquisition, required hearings, asbestos design and disposal were overcome.  The project was completed as scheduled, and the client is very satisfied with the quality of the work.
