Morrison Hershfield conducted an Environmental Assessment (EA) to determine upgrade requirements (such as sidewalks, bicycle lanes, signals, landscaping, access, illumination, utility relocations and storm water management) as well as widening and staging requirements.
In undertaking this assignment Morrison Hershfield:
- Identified alternative design concepts and solutions
- Conducted detailed inventories of natural, socio-economic and cultural environments
- Developed and assessed cross-section and alignment alternatives
- Undertook significant liaison with City of Ottawa staff, approving agencies and utilities
- Led an extensive public consultation program
- Developed landscaping mitigation plan
- Identified property requirements
- Prepared an Environmental Study Report, including functional design drawings
Several creative and innovative solutions were developed that helped resolve often competing project objectives. A minor shift in the roadway alignment avoided relocation of a heritage building and improved staging. Shared stormwater management solutions considered other area needs and were creatively integrated with recreational enhancements. Also, selected pre-construction landscaping was recommended to mitigate the significant loss of vegetation.
