Hawthorne Road Railway Overpass
Hawthorne Road Railway Overpass Morrison Hershfield
To improve the flow of traffic in the area of Russell Road, Hawthorne Road and Walkley Road, and to provide ready access to Walkley Road and Highway 417 for the newly-developing communities along Hunt Club Road, it was deemed necessary by the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton (RMOC)  to upgrade the existing two lane facility to a major four lane arterial roadway.

Undertaken in two phases over the course of several years, this project began with Morrison Hershfield leading the Class "C" Environmental Assessment and functional design.   RMOC subsequently retained Morrison Hershfield to undertake the detailed design of the roadway realignment that included the removal of an existing three span reinforced concrete structure and the construction of a new road over the rail bridge structure.

Morrison Hershfield undertook the following tasks:

  • Conducted a class environmental assessment (complete with environmental study report)
  • Provided public information centers for neighborhoods landowners, residents and other stakeholders
  • Liaised and consulted with public and approved processes, involving the National Capital Commission, railway authorities, Ministry of Environment Ontario, etc.
  • Produced conceptual, functional and detailed designs for the new railway overpass structure and related roadworks
  • Provided specialty services during construction

The new bridge design developed by Morrison Hershfield was a cost-effective, single span reinforced concrete rigid frame with piled foundations.   Dead man anchors and tie-backs were incorporated into the design to resist the high lateral loads from the embankment fills.

The approach fills were preloaded with a surcharge to ensure adequate settlement prior to paving adjacent to the abutments, which are founded on piles driven to bedrock.
