Hamlet Infrastructure Upgrades
With the anticipated expansion of the existing potable water distribution system, under the same contract the Hamlet of Monitor AB retained Morrison Hershfield to provide the design, tender and construction management services required to upgrade their wastewater collection and wastewater treatment system while designing the upgraded water distribution system.

The existing wastewater system consists of self-contained septic tanks and septic fields which are currently contaminating the existing water well from which the water system draws.  An existing potable water well, reservoir and distribution system is in place, however, the distribution system is poorly laid out, under sized and requires replacement.  The existing dead-end mains cause low-pressure concerns as well as inefficiencies in the circulation of treated water.  The proposed design introduces a two staged lagoon treatment system connected to a new sewage collection network that would tie into the existing community.

The sewage lagoon treatment system requires approximately 6.0 acres (2.4 hectares) of land and will accommodate a population of over 100 residents.

Morrison Hershfield's services included a pre-design report which investigated various sewage treatment options including packaged mechanical treatment facilities and a sewage lagoon.  Ultimately, a sewage lagoon was recommended due to the flow restrictions in the adjacent Monitor Creek.  Other services included detailed design, tendering and Alberta Environment approval strategies.
