GTAA Terminal 3 Fire Alarm System Upgrade
GTAA Terminal 3
Public buildings, especially air terminals that stay continuously operational over an extended period of time, inevitably experience physical deterioration due to extended overuse.  Changing technology, demands for constant expansion, modifications, and change of occupancy, coupled with building code changes, increase the deficiency exposure.  We were awarded the project to upgrade the existing fire alarm system in Terminal 3 at Pearson International Airport.

In the first phase of the project, we delivered a design brief outlining the existing system and provided a detailed design for a distributed, multiplexed, computer-based fire alarm system. As part of the design, we developed an installation sequence that minimized disruption to GTAA terminal operations while maintaining fire protection and life safety.

Our detailed review of the existing system’s structure at the outset of the project enabled the re-use of 90% of the system’s wiring and associated infrastructure, resulting in a significant reduction in cost and disruption.  We developed a method for enabling monitoring of the system at four locations distributed throughout the GTAA property, thus improving life safety.

Our scope included:

  • Delivering a design brief outlining the existing system
  • Providing a detailed design for a distributed, multiplexed, computer-based fire alarm system
  • Developing an installation sequence that would minimize disruption to GTAA terminal operations while maintaining fire protection and life safety
  • Providing field review and contract administration services during the construction phase of the project
