Fire Detection and Alarm System Replacement Upgrade
Ontario Science Centre
The Ontario Science Centre is comprised of three main buildings with an approximate floor area of 554,000 sq ft. The existing fire alarm system was nearing the end of its normal life cycle, resulting in increased maintenance costs and reliability issues.   We provided a Fire Alarm System Report identifying the condition of the existing system and the problems associated with retaining the existing system.  Total construction cost was estimated at $1.5 million.

Morrison Hershfield's role included:

  • Providing an initial Project Plan Report within the first two weeks of award
  • Providing the following reports, which assisted in further refining the project plan:
    • Existing Fire Alarm System Study provided details regarding sections of the existing system that could be re-used based on Code compliance and sections that required detailed testing prior to the upgrade, such as smoke control and BAS interfacing
    • Existing Sprinkler System Study provided a review of the fire suppression systems, consisting of standpipe systems, wet and pre-action sprinkler systems and kitchen hoods’ fire suppression systems
    • Project Requirements Report provided design options to improve the system performance and mitigate installation costs
  • Providing fire alarm upgrade drawings and specifications
  • Assisting throughout the tender process to select an appropriate contractor
  • Providing Clerk of Works and construction review services to ensure contract compliance and specification performance

We engineered the design transfer protocol to maintain the same level of safety during construction as before construction.  Additionally, significant portions of the wiring and associated infrastructure were identified for re-use, resulting in reduced costs and less disruption to the use of the facility.
