Environmental Monitoring and Building Envelope Performance
Environmental Monitoring and Building Envelope Performance, Library of Parliament

The Library of Parliament, constructed between 1860 and 1873, is one of the most historically significant structures in Canada, housing archival artifacts.  Still operational as the main Parliamentary Library, the structure was slated for a major renovation and restoration to meet the changing operational needs of the 21st century.  Morrison Hershfield contributed our unique knowledge of issues related to the nature and performance capabilities of historic envelope assemblies, indoor environmental requirements and control methods, and of preserving the heritage character of historic buildings.

Morrison Hershfield as the building envelope consultant to the design consortium for this project.  Our role was key in defining environmental requirements and building envelope performance criteria.  This included resolving the issues of indoor environment control capabilities, requirements in relation to the library’s archival function, and performance capabilities.

Morrison Hershfield undertook an environmental monitoring program to establish indoor environmental conditions currently being maintained and to determine seasonal indoor environment conditions the existing building envelope could handle, assessed the construction and performance capabilities of building assemblies, participated in the design resolution discussions and provided recommendations for intervention.
