Envelope Assessment for Historical University Building
Envelope Assessment for Historical University Building, University of Alberta, Morrison Hershfield

The University of Alberta is very proud of the history of its campus and the role that the Old Arts Building has played in its development and continues to play in its current multi-functional role.  Constructed in 1915, it was the first permanent academic and administration facility, hence the building is a very important historic artifact and its preservation is of prime importance.

The University of Alberta's Arts Building exterior displays vintage masonry, sandstone and terra cotta features, representative of early 20th century architecture and construction.  It is fully functional today as a teaching and performing arts facility.  It also houses the University Senate Boardroom, and is an icon of the University of Alberta Campus.

Morrison Hershfield conducted a complete building envelope assessment to advise on the status of components of the exterior building envelope.  Recommendations were made for immediate and long-term measures to repair, maintain and preserve the future of this structure.

Work included:

  • A detailed Building Envelope Review and Assessment to plan for future capital and maintenance requirements in the preservation and maintenance of this building
  • Identification of immediate tactical measures and long-term strategic remedial actions and costs

The components reviewed and identified included:

  • Roofing Systems  - Metal, Slate, and Built-Up
  • Ornamental Granite Sandstone and Terra Cotta
  • Balustrades, Balconies, Copula, Canopies
  • Masonry Walls
  • Windows
  • Doors
  • Roof Drainage
