Energy Audit of a Glass Plant
Energy Audit Glass Plant

The manufacturing of vehicle windshields involves a large energy intensive process.  A planned 35% production line expansion was the catalyst for assessing current energy use to determine opportunities for optimizing future energy utilization.  Morrison Hershfield was retained to conduct a detailed energy audit at the PPG Canada Inc. Hawkesbury, ON plant.  Opportunities to reduce operating costs were found to be significant and included all utilities.

With a peak demand of 8,000 kVA, electricity represented the largest energy cost.  The audit and subsequent implementation project produced electricity saving opportunities of over $650,000 per year.

The significant annual savings with an overall payback of less than six months facilitated a 35% production expansion for the same annual utility cost.  The Canadian Electrical Association presented the National Industrial Award for Energy Conservation to the plant for this project.  Morrison Hershfield’s successful completion of this assignment resulted in a subsequent energy audit at the PPG Owen Sound plant.
