Taylor Family Digital Library U of Calgary Morrison Hershfield
As part of the growth of the University of Calgary, the library facilities are being expanded in order to provide improved service to the students, and the public at large.

One of the library expansions includes the construction of a new library block, named the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL).  This stand-alone complex is located within the “quad” of the University, and has no direct access to public roads.

Morrison Hershfield Limited was retained to provide professional engineering consulting services to the TFDL, by means of completing the civil engineering servicing design for the shallow and deep utilities, garbage collection and internal access layout.

This project was unique in that there is extensive underground shallow and deep utilities which currently service the University.  A great amount of these services were constructed in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and accurate records pertaining to their location (and type) were not always available.  As such extensive consultation of the relevant stakeholders including the shallow utility companies and various business units within the City of Calgary was necessary in order to complete the engineering services design.

Value added services included providing recommendations on “green” construction in order that the development may be eligible for certification with the LEEDTM Green Building Council.

Engineering servicing drawings were produced and furnished to the developer in support of their application to the City of Calgary for a development permit.
