Convention Center Expansion
The Vancouver Convention Center is a unique building with special design and construction requirements.  Built over land and water on some 1,000 piles, an expansion was completed in Spring 2009, with 1.1 million sq ft tripling the previous capacity.   This innovative facility features floor-to-ceiling glass throughout the expansion, as well as a glass-walled connector to link to the existing facility.   The project also includes a six-acre living roof, one of the largest of its kind in the world.  This unique ecosystem is one of many environmental innovations.  The project was awarded LEED® Platinum certification.

Because of our significant role in the development and testing of the innovative glazing systems, Morrison Hershfield was in a position to evaluate the benefits and risks and define methods of controlling the risks.  Our participation at the laboratory and field testing of the exterior wall systems helped minimize construction problems, ensure compatibility (particularly with new products) and transition between different envelope systems.  Our broad construction review experience was highly valued in developing details for required building envelope assemblies that contributed to the high performance design of the convention complex.

Morrison Hershfield was a key partner to ensuring quality assurance and conducting enhanced field review during construction of all building envelope components including innovative curtain wall glazing and green roof.

This project was managed by Vancouver Convention Center Expansion Project Ltd. (VCCEP), which is wholly owned by the Province of British Columbia.
