Energy Efficient System Upgrades at Assumption College High School
Assumption College
Morrison Hershfield has been working with the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board’s Facility Management group for several years, performing various building condition assessments and energy audits, and implementing recommendations made in those studies.
This project at Assumption College stemmed from recommendations made in a detailed energy audit. Work included replacement of boilers with condensing type, conventional heat pump units with water source units and Building Automation System with a facility-wide digital open-protocol control system.  The heating system piping was reconfigured to lower the boiler return water temperature to ensure the boilers operate in the condensing high efficiency mode.  The Makeup Air units were retrofitted with enthalpy energy recovery wheels to recover energy from exhaust air. The constant speed fans and water distribution pumps were retrofitted with variable speed drives and interlocked with pressure sensors to limit the full load operation to high occupancy periods. The school air-conditioning units and light fixtures control sequence was redesigned to operate on pre-set school schedules and occupancy sensors installed in classrooms and offices.

In addition to preparing tender documents, we also provided project management and on-site installation review. The energy savings anticipated from the upgrades implemented under this project is estimated to be 30% of the school’s current energy consumption.
