Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto

The Toronto Centre for Performing Arts includes the Main Stage Theatre, the acoustically renowned “George Weston Recital Hall”, the “Studio Theatre”, a rehearsal hall, recording studio, VIP Suites and a large lobby area.  The building, which opened in 1993, is also home to a contemporary art gallery.

Soon after opening, this facility was deemed a great success, hosting well-known large-scale musicals in the Main Stage Theatre, recitals by world-rank musicians in the George Weston hall, and well-received local productions in the Studio Hall.

As part of the design team on a project with extremely tight budget and time restrictions, Morrison Hershfield provided needed design review to ensure buildable and durable construction, and field review to ensure conformity to the design documents.  In later years, Morrison Hershfield was brought in to solve material performance issues, such as the corrosion and distortion of the metal screens, that had eluded the previous specialist consultants.  In this case, the walls and coverings were quickly replaced and the theaters opened their new shows on time.
