The interchange at Highway 417 is configured as a partial "diamond" connecting the existing north and south sections of Castlefrank Road and providing highway access to and from the east.
Upon completion of a Schedule 'C' Class Environmental Assessment Study and submission of an Environmental Study Report, Morrison Hershfield was retained by the City to carry out the preliminary and detail design phases of the project.
Morrison Hershfield undertook the following:
-
Designed Highway 417 and future Transitway overpass structures, new interchange ramps, and modifications to Highway 417
-
Designed electrical, street lighting and landscaping
-
Developed innovative bridge designs that incorporated architectural features and a pedestrian friendly environment providing connectivity across the highway
-
Identified and procured the required approvals, permits and licenses
-
Coordinated and liaised with the Ministry of Transportation, City departments, utility companies, community groups, transit and other stakeholders
-
Prepared construction contract specifications and documents
The new structure incorporates user friendly cycling and pedestrian facilities. Advanced computer simulations were used to analyze the potential impacts of wind loads, snow drifting, vibrations and deflections on the overpass.
Morrison Hershfield provided innovative and advanced thinking that brought together both the community and the City in the development of a harmonized design for the Castlefrank Road overpass.
