Building Envelope Review for Canadian Museum of Civilization
Building Envelope Review, Canadian Museum of Civilization, Morrison Hershfield

The Canadian Museum of Civilization has an organic curvilinear shape with numerous projecting overhangs.  During its first winter of operation, icicles formed at the soffits of the overhangs, resulting in moisture staining and damage to the soffits and localized staining and spalling of the Tyndall stone masonry.  Morrison Hershfield determined the source of the envelope problems and provided remedial measures to rectify the situation.

Morrison Hershfield's investigation revealed numerous discontinuities in the membrane air barrier.   Humidified air from the pressurized interior was leaking through these discontinuities leading to condensation.  Recommendations were provided for repairs to the air barrier.

Morrison Hershfield was able to bring together multiple investigative techniques and technical expertise to identify the cause of the problems.  Appropriate remedial measures were provided to ensure that the building envelope performs as intended.
