Building Condition Audit for Conference Centre, Morrison Hershfield

The Canadian Government Conference Centre was originally constructed in 1909-1912 as Ottawa’s Union Station. This designated heritage building consists of approximately 12,500 m2 of floor area.   The building’s present use consists of offices, conference facilities and storage.  Planned future uses include leasing a significant portion of the building to the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.

Morrison Hershfield prepared a Building Condition Audit of the Canadian Government Conference Centre in preparation for a transfer from the Federal Government to the City of Ottawa (formerly Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton) for a 40-year lease.

Morrison Hershfield identified the condition of the building, the remedial/renewal recommendations and the financial requirements over the 40-year lease term.  The assessment took into consideration the heritage designation and the proposed occupancy uses, building and fire code compliance, and grant opportunities.  With this information, the City was able to assess their risks and negotiate the lease agreement with the Federal Government.
