Bluefish Penstock Replacement
Blue Fish Lake Hydro Generating Station

Morrison Hershfield was commissioned by Nerco Con Mine Ltd. to provide engineering services for replacement for their penstock at the Bluefish Lake Hydro Generating Station, 20km northeast of Yellowknife, NWT.

The project encompassed removal of the existing 600m long penstock (wood stave, steel and HDPE pipe) and replacement with a new 2.13m diameter x 10mm thick steel pipe.  The new above ground piping was supported on a concrete foundation system consisting of spread footings, piles and grade beams; rock anchors were utilized in areas where lateral pressures were anticipated.

The Bluefish Generating Station is in an isolated location with no year-round road access.  Therefore, design of the penstock required detailed geometric layout so that all of the pipe could be fabricated offsite (with sufficient fabrication accuracy to facilitate final joint welding on site) and shipped to the site over winter roads.
