Big Hill Springs Residential Community Morrison Hershfield
Big Hill Springs is a residential community located near Calgary AB.  Morrison Hershfield was retained to provide single family residences with associated commercial servicing.  The project location presented design challenges in the form of water servicing and wastewater disposal.  The position of Alberta Environment was to longer issue licenses allowing for the withdrawal of water from the Bow River.

Wastewater disposal options included the construction of lift stations pumping sewage via a three kilometer pipeline to connect to Calgary's existing infrastructure. However, we identified an alternate method in the form of deep well injection, thereby eliminating the need for agreements and approvals with the city.

Several alternatives were explored to allow for water service to this development, including water wells and a combination of water wells and withdraw from West Nose Creek.  Morrison Hershfield, through a professional association with a nearby developer, was able to facilitate the sale of the developer’s Bow River water diversion rights to Jayman Masterbuilt, allowing for the development to proceed.

Morrison Hershfield's role included:

  • Review of original concept plans provided by planning consultant
  • Identification of subdivision water source and recommendation of options for sewage disposal
  • Consulted with the Municipal District of Rocky View No. 44 as well as Alberta Environment
  • Feasibility of proposed water and wastewater servicing issue
