Airport Airside Pavement Rehabilitation Morrison Hershfield
This project consisted of the pavement rehabilitation of two airside pavement surfaces at the Edmonton International Airport.  The first was the cold-milling and overlay of approximately 450 metres of Taxiway Bravo.  The existing asphalt surface was cold-milled to remove all crack sealant and restore the crown, then the entire area received a 60mm overlay.   After the paving was completed, transverse joints were saw-cut then routed and sealed to control cracking.  The second portion was the cold-milling and inlay of Runway 12-30.  An area approximately 800 metres long by 15 metres wide was milled to a depth of 75 mm then inlayed with asphalt concrete pavement.

  Morrison Hershfield's services included:

  • Preliminary survey and engineering
  • Detailed design
  • Investigation and review of asphalt specifications
  • Investigation of asphalt crack sealants
  • Tendering of documents
  • Contract administration
  • Construction supervision
  • Quality assurance testing
  • Documenting and recording construction techniques and quantities
  • Overall project management
  • Liaison between owner and contractor

Morrison Hershfield reviewed the existing ERAA asphalt specifications, investigated alternatives and made specific recommendations for changes to improve the durability of the asphalt and extending the life of the pavement.  Materials available for crack sealing were reviewed to provide the client with a list of approved sealants to reduce the occurrence of “pull-outs”.
