The Ministry of Transportation Ontario found that the “Total Project Management” type project design they had adopted resulted in a lack of variety and attention to aesthetics in highway bridges. As bridges are significant investments and prominent landmarks, this situation has raised major concerns. The Ministry’s intention was to to address this issue by the publication of the Guidelines.
In this assignment Morrison Hershfield provided the following services:
- Developed layout plan and content sheet
- Conducted extensive research on international references, symposium reports, papers, journals, histories of bridge development, guidelines developed in international jurisdictions, complex specialty reports, etc.
- Addressed all structural, architectural and environmental issues arising out of the recommendations
- Designed guidelines including formatting, pictures, illustrations, sketches, and drawings
- Held prime authorship of the guidelines, editing, printing, and the like
- Met the project timelines
- Completed the assignment within budget
The publication is expected to have major impact on the design process and the ultimate appearance of the Province’s highway system. Municipalities, transportation agencies, and other bridge owners can also make use of the publication to improve the aesthetics of their structures.
The client provided Morrison Hershfield with an excellent performance evaluation upon the completion of the "Aesthetic Guidelines for Bridges."
