CMHC’s Best Practice Guide – Architectural Precast Concrete Walls - An Overview
Kevin L. Chouinard, Dave Scott, William C. Brown, David Dechamplain

ABSTRACT

This paper presents an overview of the latest in a series of Best Practice Guide publications by CMHC. The Architectural Precast Concrete Best Practice Guide was written by Morrison Hershfield Limited with guidance provided by an industry sponsored steering committee. The purpose of the Guide is to summarize current information on architectural precast concrete and to provide designers with an understanding of this construction product illustrating recommended design details and site practices.

The durability of building envelopes incorporating architectural precast systems, like others, requires careful consideration of the design and construction of each component, and it is important to consider the overall requirements of the envelope during design and construction. Understanding how architectural precast concrete can be used as an integral part of the building envelope enables designers to make appropriate design choices. The reward is enhanced performance, excellent durability, and extended service life with an aesthetically attractive building envelope.
