This course will present the cradle-to-grave environmental footprint of precast concrete.  The first step in reducing our environmental footprint is to measure how big it currently is. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a scientific approach to measure and interpret the environment impacts of making and using a product over its life. LCA looks at the entire life cycle: from extracting raw material from the earth, to transporting and manufacturing, to recycling and landfilling. LCA results show details of carbon footprint, embodied energy, waste generated, ozone depletion, acid rain, and air and water pollution. To understand precast concrete's environmental performance, we conducted an LCA of precast concrete infrastructure products. This course will present an LCA study of four precast concrete products typically used underground: manhole, septic tank, utility structure, and pipe.  The study of these products will serve as an example to show participants what an LCA is, show how it can be used to reduce environmental impacts, and explain how consumers of precast concrete products can use LCA data.  A copy of the PowerPoint presentation is now available online.
