Under Construction: The Brant Street Pier
October 21, 2011

Morrison Hershfield was retained by the City of Burlington ON in 2011 to provide engineering design and contract administration for the completion of the Brant Street Pier.  The structure is the final phase of the City’s Downtown Waterfront Project.  Funding is provided by the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program, Halton Region, the City of Burlington and Burlington Hydro.  Construction of the pier commenced in 2006 but was halted due to construction and legal issues.  Recently retained as a structural advisor to the City, Morrison Hershfield is now the engineers of record of this work.

The Brant Street Pier will be a signature structure in Downtown Burlington.  Extending 132 metres over Lake Ontario, the distinctive S-shaped structure with a unique cable-handrailing system will become a center of attraction for local residents as well as visitors to the City.  It will offer spectacular views of the lake and the shoreline.  An innovative lookout elevated four meters above the main concrete deck will be a prime location for sightseers to enjoy views of the lake and the Burlington waterfront.

With environmental protection in mind, renewable energy for all pier and district lighting will be partly generated from a wind turbine, which is also used an energy conservation demonstration project.  The lighted tower of the turbine will provide spectacular illumination effects for festivals and non-event days.  The free flow of water under the elevated pier will allow natural processes such as the movement of fish and amphibians and the drifting of water to shore.
