Algonquin College in Ottawa is celebrating the opening of their new Center for Construction Excellence. The 16,750 m2 building is a showcase and teaching laboratory for sustainable construction and integrated learning. A total of 2,500 students each year will be taught advanced design, building science, sustainability, and construction practices within this inspiring “living building”.
The $79 million facility showcases many different design styles, construction methods, and materials uses. Students can observe systems through cut-away sections and displays, and there is an integrated building monitoring and modeling system that will allow students and staff to experiment with operations and energy efficiency as a living learning tool. The building is designed and constructed using the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating system, with a targeted LEED Platinum certification. The five-storey interior atrium, around which classrooms are arranged, has a decorative bio-filter wall that is intended to contribute to improved air quality.

The integration of high performance glazing has provided a striking exterior façade, while balancing energy conservation and providing natural daylighting of interior spaces and a connection of the exterior for the students and staff. An undulating green roof covering more than 50% of the surface and the landscaping incorporates natural ecosystems. The building is integrated with the City transit network and pedestrian walkways.
