Indigo Athens: Where it’s Hip to be Green

July 07, 2009
The new Hotel Indigo in Athens, GA, is anticipated to be among the first three hotels in the world to achieve LEED®  Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.  Sustainable site development is a key feature of the property. Morrison Hershfield has partnered with the architectural firm of Surber, Barber, Choate & Hertlein as the building envelope consultant.  The new hotel is expected to open in August 2009.

We are responsible for ensuring optimal performance of the proposed building envelope systems, reviewing the envelope for thermal performance and reviewing below grade waterproofing for this soon-to-be hip, green, social epicenter. As the building envelope experts, the Morrison Hershfield team has meticulously reviewed all aspects of the building envelope and its functioning qualities, which will ultimately assist in the project goal of achieving LEED® Gold certification.

Some of the green features include an outdoor cistern to collect rainwater for landscape irrigation, an energy-efficient heating and air-conditioning system and regenerative elevators that self-power after use.  The building also has a green roof, and the site will include “green pavement” systems where possible.  The property will have an on-site public transit stop, bicycle racks, and priority parking for hybrid vehicles to encourage alternate transportation to and from the hotel.  The location also allows hotel guests to walk to the Classic Center, the University of GA, downtown shopping, restaurants and nightlife.

Morrison Hershfield is committed helping our clients understand their environmental challenges.  Our attention to sustainability in the built environment includes green building and LEED® consulting, green infrastructure, materials durability, energy modeling, natural light simulation, carbon footprinting, alternative energy design and building commissioing.  We have also collaborated with the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute in the development of the latest version of the ATHENA®  Impact Estimator for Buildings software.

With the power of know-how, our experts can help you achieve your environmental, energy and sustainability goals.
