Experts Speak at Winnipeg 2011 - 13th Canadian Conference on Building Science and Technology
April 26, 2011

Morrison Hershfield is pleased to be a Gold Sponsor of the 13th Canadian Conference on Building Science and Technology, being held from May 10- 13, 2011 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.   This year’s conference, The Future of the Building Envelope…Building Upon Our Past, will emphasize new innovations and ideas still under development in the building science industry while illustrating how past techniques and technology have helped bring us to where we are today.

The conference will feature over 40 speakers, including six of Morrison Hershfield’s own experts. Technical sessions are divided into theory and practice.  MH presenters include:

Andy Lang, AScT will be presenting two papers at the conference.  The first was co-authored with Medgar Marceau PE, and is a case study on a condensation problem encountered on a precast concrete clad building located in Seattle.  The presentation will also outline the repair strategy executed to address the condensation problems.  More information  The second paper discusses the drainage requirements for cladding in the International Building and Residential Code and the different interpretations that have been adopted by specific jurisdictions.  This paper also discusses a means of defining drainage capacity along with an opinion on designing and constructing to these minimum code requirements.   More Information

Sophie Mercier, P.Eng  and Hamid Heidarali, P.Eng will be presenting a paper on the envelope remediation of a heritage building.  The Salt Building is a significant landmark located in Vancouver, B.C.  It recently underwent a major rehabilitation to be transformed into a commercial building, with restaurant, bakery and café.  The absence of moisture barrier in the existing wall assembly and the designation as a heritage building, where the cladding was considered a significant component that needed to be retained made this a challenging project. Removal of the cladding and upgrading of the exterior portion of the wall was not a viable option.  The presentation will examine the innovative design approach, provide details of how this design approach was implemented, discuss the monitoring results and the performance implications of the applied strategy in dealing with similar envelope remediation of wood frame heritage buildings.  More information

Mark Lawton P.Eng, in a paper co-authored with David Ricketts P.Eng., will present Guidelines for the Practice of Building Enclosure Engineering.  The subject material stems from a process of defining and formalizing the practice of building enclosure engineering in British Columbia.  The presentation will focus on the logic and content of the guidelines.  More information

Stephane Hoffman, P.Eng in a paper co-authored with Jose Estrada, will be discussing the implications of open joints for the performance of rainscreen systems used in wall claddings.  Various approaches to the design of open jointed rainscreen cladding systems will be discussed along with a case study that demonstrates the detailing of an open jointed cladding system.  More information

Claude Louvouezo, will presenting a paper titled “Challenges and Opportunities from Design and Construction of Drained Precast Wall Assembly”   More information
