On Tuesday March 27, 2001, City of New Westminster Mayor Helen Sparkes and Mediacom Inc. president Brian McLean officially opened the new Pedestrian/Bicycle Overpass at McBride Boulevard and 7th Avenue.
Designed by Morrison Hershfield Limited, this innovative Greater Vancouver overpass is a Canadian first. The $1.5 million structure was completely paid for by Mediacom, an outdoor advertising company. In exchange for funding the project, the City gave Mediacom advertising rights for the four 10 by 20 foot billboards integrated into the structure for the next twenty years.
