On September 10, 2001, Maxim Morrison Hershfield Limited was honoured to receive the American Public Works Association Project of the Year Award for the Rathole Project. The project, undertaken for the City of Edmonton, involved the demolition of the 109 Street/104 Avenue Underpass, known locally as the Rathole.
The old two-lane Rathole was replaced by a six-lane divided highway at grade level, with a new major intersection linking 109 Street and 104 Avenue. The demolition and removal was completed three weeks ahead of schedule despite heavy vehicular use and numerous public and business concerns.
This prestigious award is given annually by the American Public Works Association for transportation projects valued between $2 and $10 million. The award was presented at the 2001 APWA International Public Works Congress and Exposition in Philadelphia. This is the first time that a Canadian project has won the award, and Maxim Morrison Hershfield Limited, as primary consultant, is very proud to be the recipient.
